A WRITER’S LIFE

It seems a while since I’ve posted anything, and I’ve been trying to think what I’ve been doing.

Well, I’ve been writing. I’m up to 40,000 words in the second book in The Uist Girl Series, and I think I know where I’m going with it. As usual, I’ve loved the research that’s needed when writing a historical novel. I’ve read a few books about the Hebrides and have really enjoyed them. You’ll see them in the photos above. I also visited the Tenement House in Buccleuch Street in Glasgow, and it was so interesting. The woman who owned it, a Miss Toward, changed very little inside from when she moved there in 1911 until she died in the early sixties. She also kept lots of items such as receipts, toilet rolls, magazines, even a pot of jam made way back when. Again, this is useful research as Chrissie will be going to visit her Aunt Katie in Glasgow, and it was good to see visually what a flat would have looked like inside back then. I’ve put some pictures from it above.

The other things I’ve been doing are courses. I did the Bryan Cohen Amazon Ads Course. I think this is the third time I’ve done it, but this time I’ve done exactly what he said to do and have posted 20 ads which are a mixture of automatic and manual targeting. So far I’ve only had some pages read on Kindle Unlimited, so am a little disappointed not to have any sales. I also did a course run by the History Quill about writing a series. I thought it would be useful as this is my first time at writing one. It was beneficial as it made me realise I don’t need to just write linearly about Chrissie. I can go off in a lot of tangents with other characters taking the starring role. For the moment, I’ll stick with Chrissie, but who knows what will happen in the future.

The highlight, however, has been winning second prize in Bearsden Writer’s Travel Writing Competition. I was absolutely delighted to receive my certificate from Ann McLaren (See photo above).

We’ll be heading off in our campervan soon, so I will just post as and when I have something interesting to report. Keep well.
